Ka'Ingo Private Reserve Conservation Project
Over the past four years the management and owners of Ka'Ingo Private Reserve & Spa initiated and pursued various conservation projects. Being located in the Limpopo Province and geographic bushveld area supports the notion of back to nature. Ka'Ingo is a big five reserve in the Waterberg mountains combining family friendly offerings at Dinkweng Safari Camp and five star accommodation at Ka'Ingo's main lodge with authentic safari and game experiences. Here conservation is a way of life driven by Reserve Manager Nick Callichy. Programmes include sable, cheetah, clean buffalo, white rhino and importantly a leopard release project. Being located in the Waterberg Biosphere is not taken lightly and all focus is on responsible tourism and upliftment of the African Bushveld heritage.
The recently established Zorgvliet Private Residence Club which includes the Dinkweng Safari Camp is creating a unique platform where fractional owners of the luxurious lodges not only benefit from their vacation investment but also have the privilege of participation in conservation projects at Ka'Ingo. The Zorgvliet Private Residence Club is offering through its affiliation with the leading international exchange company, the opportunity for interested parties in many other countries to participate in these conservation actions. Marketing South Africa and in particular wild life experiences is the foundation of sustainable eco tourism, the platform to communicate these experiences through the above channels should therefore be optimised. The management team of the Zorgvliet Private Residence Club will be conducting workshops in this regard in the UK and USA.
Marrying a family friendly environment with the harsh reality of game management is an ongoing challenge; fortunately various individuals and companies are actively supporting the endeavours and the interest is growing rapidly. Practical examples of hands on activities are two recent focussed projects. Managing white rhino genes and bloodlines or releasing threatened leopard on the reserve is all handled with the same commitment. Dinkweng shareholders and members of the Zorgvliet Private Residence Club are experiencing unique interaction as was recently noted. An early morning departure from Dinkweng saw the group travelling across the scenic mountain route linking the two farms. The future well being of two young animals was at stake. Firstly a rhino bull had to be caught and relocated as he was creating social problem in the herd. Replacing him with another bull will bring new genes into the pool. A decision was made and the plan worked out. He would have to be darted from a helicopter and swiftly guided into a trailer for transportation to his new territory. Meticulous planning and coordination between the helicopter crew and the ground team was of the essence. All went well and the guests participating in the exercise had an experience that they will remember.
During the same weekend a young leopard, caught on a nearby farm was being rehabilitated and needed to be collared before release. The monitoring of his movements and activities assisted the Leopard Conservation Project with inputs on managing the threat against leopards in the region. Known as a stealth predator the leopard growled and hissed above his fighting weight. His 38 kilogram of pure muscles is still far from his expected grown up weight of around 70 kilograms. But will he have the opportunity to grow up in an antagonising environment? A thorough examination was witnessed by the participating guests, they assisted in taking down some important information and data on the leopard. After collared with a GPS monitor he was released in a boma for a further period of orientation. All hold thumbs that another leopard was saved.
Understanding the plight of potentially endangered game is enriching people and empowering the wild life. The Zorgvliet Private Residence Club is committed to offering members special experiences through amenities and unique encounters.
